Bio-inspired casted girder optimized for vibration loads

Unwanted vibrations can impair the product function or even lead to structural damage. Traditional methods for avoiding high vibration amplitudes contradict the original goal of lightweight constructions. Using Synera, different bio-inspired structures were applied to a casted magnet carrier structure (girder) for particle accelerators. The resulting structure showed a significant eigenfrequency shift, high stiffness, and a comparably low mass.

The Synera environment with its automated workflows enables us to efficiently apply complex bio-inspired structures and design principles to technical use-cases achiving design properties that can exceed those of conventional engineering techniques.

The Alfred Wegener Institute researches polar and marine regions to understand Earth's climate system. In collaboration with global partners, we study climate change, its impact on oceans and polar areas, and whether trends are short-term or long-term. Polar research is both a scientific challenge and a glimpse into our future.
